Morton's Neuroma

Morton's Neuroma

Morton's Neuromas are one of the most common forefoot injuries that we treat at Wagga Podiatry Plus.

Morton's neuromas have the ability to cause significant and severe pain that can very easily limit your ability to walk, stand or run for any length of time.

What is a neuroma?

A Morton's neuroma is the inflammation, scarring and subsequent thickening of the intermetatarsal nerve, a small nerve that runs between the metatarsals on the bottom (plantar) side of the foot. A morton's neuroma can cause shooting, burning or aching pain on the bottom of the balls of the feet and into the toes. It can often cause numbness of the toes and sometimes a tingling sensation. The pain usually comes on after standing, walking or running and can be worsened by going on to the tip toes or wearing flat shoes and shoes with a heel.

Is it avoidable?

Some people have natural predisposition to developing a morton's neuroma. These can include people with….

  • High arches (Pes cavus)

  • Low arches or flat feet

  • Bunions

  • People who have to wear restrictive shoes like high heels

  • People whose jobs include going up and down stairs or ladders

Our Podiatrists are skilled at diagnosing and treating Morton's neuromas. Whilst they are often not needed, our podiatrists can refer for imaging such as ultrasound to confirm if the nerve is entrapped or damaged.
