Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles tendonitis (Achilles tendinopathy or tendinosis) is the inflammation or degeneration of the Achilles tendon (the strong and thick band on the back of the heel).

Most people suffering from Achilles tendonitis will experience pain around the back of heel, up the Achilles tendon and into the lower part of the calf. This can occur before, during or after exercise.

Who develops Achilles tendonitis?

Anyone can develop Achilles tendonitis but often we see it in people who have recently increased their overall movement load. Think of those who have recently started doing more running, who have begun their sports seasons, who are walking their new dog more or who have recently started taking the stairs more at work.

Often people whose jobs, sports or daily activities have repetitive motions develop Achilles tendonitis.

Why does it occur?

As well as the increase in loads, there are lots of other factors that contribute to Achilles tendon becoming weak, degenerate and inflamed. These factors are more individual and require a proper assessment to identify them. Our podiatrists are best placed to perform a thorough assessment and identify which specific factors are contributing to the Achilles becoming overloaded and injured. As part of this assessment, the Podiatrist will assess your muscle strength, the joint ranges of motion, the quality of motion in the joints, your balance and propriopception, assess your footwear and importantly, assess the way that you walk, run and move. We will be able to pick up on subtleties in your gait pattern such as the timing of your heel lift, the angle of the heel bone or the rotation of your feet that may be contributing to the injury.

How is it treated?

The treatment of Achilles tendonitis is individualised and dependent on the factors that are contributing to the injury. It will always incorporate advice regarding your individual training load and incorporate a bespoke strengthening program when it is suitable. The treatment plan may also include hands-on treatments such as shockwave therapy, dry needling, stretches and strapping and may include advice/education with regards to shoes or orthotics.
