High Arch (Cavus) Feet

High Arch (Cavus) Feet

Pes cavus, sometimes known as tripod foot is a specific foot type that is characterised by a high medial arch. Whilst many people think high arch feet are indestructible they can in fact be the cause of many injuries and foot pains.

High arch feet are typically more rigid, the joints that are in the foot to help absorb shock when we stand, walk and run do not function properly and it means our feet do not absorb shock as well as they should. This places extra pressure and stress on other areas of the body, like the bones of the foot, the tibia (leg bone), knees, hips and lower back.

High Arches can also cause…

  • Ankle sprains

  • Peroneal tendon injuries

  • Poor balance

  • Plantar Fasciitis

  • Heel pain

  • Ankle pain

  • Calf and Achilles tightness/pain

  • Knee pain

  • Back pain

  • Excessive corn and callus production

  • Hammertoes

  • Foot numbness

How is it managed?

A biomechanical assessment is performed to assess the function of the feet and ankles. After this, a treatment plan would be suggested which may include things such as…

  • Changes to footwear that are suitable for your feet and the activity you are using them for.

  • Silicone shock-absorbing pads - to help provide the shock absorption that the foot may be lacking in

  • Foot mobilisation therapy - to increase the mobility of the joint.

  • Foot orthotics (orthoses) - to provide support and cushioning to the feet and relieve the stress on overloaded joints and soft tissues. Not everyone with high arches will require orthotics but many will benefit from the increase support and shock absorption that they will provide for people with high arches.
