Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are an irritating and often painful problem whereby the sharp edge of the nail pushes into the fleshy part of the skin of the toe.

This pressure can cause redness, sensitivity and swelling and can often cut the skin which can cause subsequent infections to occur.

Ingrown toenails often start by feeling uncomfortable in shoes, with pressure from the bedsheets or when the skin is pushed into the nail. If they are left untreated they will generally get worse and can result in severe pain and chronic infections.

It is always best to have an ingrown toenail treated early by a Podiatrist to avoid this from happening.

What Causes Ingrown Nails?

Ingrown toenails can be caused by tight shoes, improper nail cutting techniques or plain bad luck. Some people are especially unlucky and are genetically predisposed to ingrown toenails by having wide nails that become curved or involuted.

Early Signs of an ingrown toenail

  • Increased redness around the edge of the nail

  • Pain when pushing the nail into the skin

  • Throbbing of the toe when sitting or laying down

  • Infection or pus coming from the edge of the nail.

In more serious cases, often when an infection is present, you may notice severe throbbing, redness around the whole toe and thickening of the skin at the nail edge.

This can cause significant pain when touching the area or putting it into shoes.

How are ingrown toenails treated?

Wagga Podiatry Plus’ team of Podiatrists are experts in providing painless, quick and effective treatments for ingrown toenails.

Early treatment is the best treatment. Ingrown toenails will generally worsen without professional treatment. Being treated early reduces the risk of developing painful, infected nails that may require more invasive treatments and surgeries.

Conservative Treatments

Most ingrown toenails we treat can be fixed on the spot. They will be painlessly and expertly removed without requiring any anesthesia or downtime after the appointment. The Podiatrist will investigate what caused the problem in the first place and put in place a plan to stop it from happening again.

Pain free, fast and extremely effective.
