Ball of foot pains

Ball of foot pains

Pain on the ball of the foot, often referred to as metatarsalgia is a common injury that we assess and treat at Wagga Podiatry Plus.

The ball of the foot (forefoot) is made up of hundreds of individual structures that are prone to overload, inflammation and irritation.

The term metatarsalgia is an umbrella term for a multitude of conditions that fall in this area of the foot. It is important that we identify which specific injury you are suffering from so that it can be treated properly.

Some specific conditions that we commonly see include..

  • Sesamoiditis

  • Morton's Neuroma

  •  Capsulitis/Synovitis

  • Stress fractures

  • Plantar plate ruptures

  • Tendonitis

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Bursitis

How is it diagnosed?

It is critical that the individual structure is identified so that treatment can be specified, this can only be done through a thorough assessment.

Our podiatrists are highly experienced at accurately diagnosing and treating specific ball of foot injuries. The Podiatrists will form a diagnosis by listening to the the full history of your injury, palpating the sore areas, moving the joints through specific movements, assessing the individual muscles of the area, performing functional weight-bearing tests, watching you walk/run, referring for ultrasounds/xrays and assessing your pressure distributions.

How is it treated?

Once our Podiatrists have determined the structure that is injured and identified what individual factors have contributed to the injury, our team will put in place a bespoke treatment plan to manage it.

Possible treatment options may include...

  • Padding/ strapping
