PACT®

PACT® is an innovative and painless treatment for nail fungus that is both quick and safe, with no reported side effects. Traditionally, only a few treatments have been available for fungal toenails, such as antifungal nail lacquers and prescription medications. However, these treatments have frustrating limitations. Topical treatments have been found to only have limited effectiveness when used alone and prescription medications can interact with other drugs and cause adverse side effects and even be completely unsuitable for some individuals.

PACT® treatment involves the use of a unique catalyst gel and a powerful LED light. This therapy is effective in combating the infection and selectively killing the fungus, without generating excessive heat. By matching the dye with a specific color, the treatment targets the fungus and eradicates it. For more information on PACT® therapy for fungal toenails, please read on.

What is PACT?

PACT® is short for Photodynamic Antimicrobial Therapy, which is a scientific term describing the treatment's mechanism. This therapy employs a unique blue dye that sensitizes fungal cells to light of a particular wavelength. The blue dye is activated when the infected toenail is exposed to light, rapidly killing the fungal cells.

Fungal cells in the nail plate are more resistant and difficult to penetrate than other organisms. However, PACT therapy can target the infection without damaging the surrounding skin. As a result, PACT is a fast, safe, and painless treatment option for fungal toenails.

How Does it Work?

PACT® treatment relies on photochemical reactions that occur through the interaction of photosensitizing agents, light, and oxygen. Specifically, PACT Fungal Nail Gel is activated by a specific wavelength of light delivered by the PACT® system. The blue gel is stimulated by the UV light, releasing energy that generates oxygen free radicals. These reactive oxygen species trigger fungal cell death without harming the surrounding tissue of the nail bed.

Your Treatment Plan

Your individual treatment plan will be tailored to your feet specifically. The amount of sessions and co-treatments required ultimately depends on the number of toes affected and the extent of the infection in the nails.

Before any treatment, the thick nails are thinned down to help the UV light penetrate through the whole nail. Following this, your podiatrist will apply the PACT® Nail Fungus Gel, or blue dye, to cover the affected toenail for 10 minutes. Subsequently, the PACT® UV light will be placed over the affected toenails for around 10 minutes. Treatment session duration may vary from 20 minutes to one hour, depending on the number of affected toenails.

After the PACT treatment, you will be instructed to apply a topical cream to the toenail 2 times per week.

Frequency of Sessions

The frequency of your PACT therapy will be determined by several factors, including the severity and duration of the infection, as well as your medical history. It's important to note that healthy toenails typically grow 15mm per month, and it may take at least three months for the treatment to be visibly noticeable.

Based on our recommended treatment protocol for PACT therapy for fungal toenails, your podiatrist will advise you on the frequency of your therapy sessions. Depending on the severity of the infection, the sessions may be scheduled weekly, fortnightly, or monthly. Your podiatrist will also monitor your progress and adjust the treatment frequency accordingly to achieve the best possible outcome.
