Children’s Walking Assessments

Catching problems early makes them easier to fix.

Healthy feet are important for children as they grow, develop and stay active. Changes in foot posture, walking patterns or leg alignment during childhood can sometimes lead to pain, clumsiness or difficulty keeping up with sport and daily activities.

Children’s feet are constantly developing, which means many concerns seen by parents are a normal part of growth. However, some problems can benefit from assessment and early management to help ensure children move comfortably and confidently.

Our podiatrists have extensive experience assessing children’s feet and lower limb development. Appointments focus on understanding how your child walks, runs and moves, as well as identifying any structural or biomechanical factors that may be contributing to symptoms.

Common concerns we assess and treat include:

  • In-toeing (pigeon toe)
  • Out-toeing walking patterns
  • Tripping, clumsiness or limping
  • Heel pain and Sever’s disease
  • Knee or hip pain related to foot mechanics
  • Osgood-Schlatter disease
  • Ingrown toenails
  • Overlapping or unusual toe positions
  • Growing pains affecting the legs

While some children complain of pain, it is often parents who first notice changes such as limping, unusual walking patterns, frequent tripping or unusual arch shapes. If you notice any of these changes, an assessment can help determine whether it is part of normal development or something that may benefit from treatment.

Children’s Footwear

Choosing the right footwear for children can be challenging as their feet change rapidly during growth. Shoes that are too tight, too loose or lacking support can sometimes contribute to foot discomfort or abnormal walking patterns.

During an appointment we can assess both your child’s feet and their footwear to ensure they are appropriate for their stage of development. Regular checks help ensure children remain comfortable, active and supported as they grow.
