Beware of Moving House!

I had the joy of moving house not long ago and like many people before me, I woke up the next day with a fresh injury. This time it appeared to be my Achilles tendon which was giving me grief.

I am constantly amazed by how often people tell me they've hurt themselves whilst moving house, shifting heavy furniture or some other means of moving heavy thing from one spot to another.

It' would be no different for many Physiotherapists, Podiatrists or other health professionals in Wagga or anywhere else. People so often have no understanding why or where a fresh sore foot or leg and ankle injury has popped up but when quizzed further they realise that they also has happened to move houses at the same time that it first popped up.

For someone young, fit (relatively) and healthy (also relatively) moving a fridge isn't going to inevitably cause me an injury. But it does increase my chance of injury. The reason that this happens is that it represents a sudden spike in the acute load that my body isn't fully adept at handling.

More simply put, If carrying an extra 20kg box up and downstairs 150 times isn't something that you ordinarily do, the extra load can leave certain tissues susceptible to overload and this may be the straw that breaks the camel's back in creating an injury.

Obviously, for a lot of people this doesn't happen and the reason why that is is because the increase in load INCREASES the risk of injury but doesn't necessarily CAUSE the injury.

I was lucky that with a bit of rest and some proper care by Waggas best podiatrist (Bill), my injury settled down really quickly.
